It was about this time last year when someone gave me a ring asking if I could set them up a listing in my directory and give them a bit of boost. I've always been soft when people ring, so said sure, no problemI set them up a free premier listing and also set them up a few special pages targeting their keyword.
Sure enough all my pages got picked up and all these pages were providing them some nice search engine friendly links.
I had forgotten about this until tonight and whilst having a bit of a browse around my site found the pages. After a quick search at google I saw I was top 10 for their primary keyphrase, followed the link from my site to theirs and there bang on the front of their homepage was a link to one of my main competitors :o(
I had a look around their other pages thinking maybe I was on an internal somewhere, but no.
I decided to send them an email saying, I see they have a link to my competitor and please could they also link back to me.
10 minutes later a reply! nice, I thought someone quick to respond and maybe they would get my link set up quick too.
But no, this was the reply

Regarding your request for a link - we only link to sites which will
give us a business advantage and exposure to possible customers,
together with enhancing our search engine ranking. Having looked at
your site I can't yet see an advantage for us or you.
