Launching a successful business website

Optimise for search engines

The last stage of the build is also the first stage of marketing; getting search engine optimised.

Search engines like easily identifiable keywords; so search engine optimisation (SEO) is all about filling your copy naturally with as many keywords as possible referring to your services and location.

So a roofing company based in Shropshire could say;

“Welcome to ABC Roofing services; offering flat and tiled roof repairs and installations across the Shropshire region”

Finding lots of places to use the keywords (roofing services, flat roof, tiled roof, roof repairs, roof installations and Shropshire) makes it clear to Google what the company is all about. Don’t overdo it though, “Welcome to ABC roofing, a roofing company specialising in roofing services for people with roofing problems or needing roofing” would go on the blacklist for cheating!
Get Online

Next you need to get online with a website host who rents Internet space to you. They’ll give you an FTP account which you can access with FTP software. All you do is log in, click the file on your computer you want to put online, and it’s done!

A website address or domain name can also be easily ordered online but take care picking a good one; www.abctiledandflatroofingshropshire.com is descriptive but easy to get wrong; www.abcroofing.com is ideal.
Ongoing marketing

First you need to tell search engines that you’re there, if you look around Google you can find links to submit url, the url is your website address and means Unique Reference Link. Submit it to as many search engines as you can; 85% of websites are found through them.

Next let your current and future customers know about it; get the domain name printed on your letterhead, adverts and business cards. Get email stationery like an autosignature with the website link in it set up.

Finally, aim to get links from online directories, many of these services on the Internet are free and just need you to fill out a form, the links can drive traffic to your site and also help your SEO results.

As a general golden rule remember good service and make sure you handle web enquiries as quickly as any other; you can guarantee the potential client will also have e-mailed your competitors.

Beyond these essentials market the website as you would your phone number and consider occasional web only special offers or mailing list facilities which allow you to capture e-mail addresses you can send future special offers to.

After a few months you can assess your web statistics in more detail to see how your site is working; low traffic means you need to do more marketing whilst good traffic with low sales suggests your copy just isn’t convincing people to call you and needs improving; successful websites are all about ongoing development.
Advice on utilising experts

Doing all this alone can take a lot of time so digest this information, do as much as you can, then seek the support of professionals to see you through but be careful who you employ. Web design is a popular way for students or freelancers to earn money; their prices are low but what happens if there’s a problem at 3am or if they get ill?

Really good web design incorporates a team of copywriters, designers, search engine experts and admin staff. Always look to work with well established companies and look for credibility; how is their company website, can you see a postal address, how does the portfolio look to you? Do your research, ask questions and know what you’re looking for with the advice in this article.

Once you feel good about a supplier, a big mistake is expecting them to do everything; only you can tell them what your business is really about, then they can translate that into a great website. Get the materials ready and available and if you speak to a copywriter answer their questions as fully as you can; too much information is so much better than too little.

The search engines don’t see my website

After all the time and effort you put in to creating and publishing your website it is heartbreaking, or bank balance breaking to find that nobody visits your shiny new pages.

You presume that the content hungry search engines will leap at the chance to crawl and index a new site, but they don’t. The most important search engine, those that account for the vast majority of search and traffic are Google, Yahoo and Microsoft MSN, I am going to call them GYM from now on.

GYM have a vast number of sites they already crawl, they look at the internal links on each site to index all the pages and then they look at external links on the sites to find other places to index. The chances are that your new site doesn’t have any external links so GYM won’t find you.

What you need to do as soon as possible is visit the GYM submission pages and tell them about your site. Once you have submitted your site it can take several weeks before you get indexed, so the sooner you do your bit the sooner your site can be found.

But, there’s always a but.
The search engines make vast amounts of money by selling advertising alongside search results and people will only use their search engine if the results that come back are relevant.
When GYM arrive at your site they will look at:

. The title of each page
. The description
. The keywords you have defined
. The words on each page

Now GYM don’t tell us exactly how they categorise and rank websites but there are some things we know they do.
The main thing they will do is compare your keywords to the words on your pages. If you chose engineering as a key word and then that word or at least some synonyms of that word do not appear in your text then the word will be discounted.

There is a great way of finding out what Google thinks of your keywords and that is to set up an Adwords account. Even if you have no intention of running regular Adwords campaigns the feedback you get is worth a few pounds.
Telling you how to set up an account is beyond the scope of this article but search for adwords on Google and it will be one of the first results you get.
Once you figure it out, put all your keywords into an advert with a minimum bid. While you are there go to the opportunities page and click on the keyword tool, put your keywords in there and it will give you lots more keyword ideas in return.

Run your campaign for a day and then go back and look at the comments Google puts against each keyword.
Most will say ‘below first page bid of xxx’ Look for the ones that say ‘rarely shown due to low relevance’ Google is saying that it won’t show your pages for those key words even if you pay them. So they certainly won’t show them for free.

Then you need to rewrite the copy of your web pages to include the keywords you were short on. DO NOT just put the keywords in a group that has no meaning, GYM knows this trick and will not take kindly to it.

Make your website work for you

So you have got your business up and running, you have worked hard to get this far and you now need to start bringing in the customers. “A website is what we need” you say! So you build your website or you get somebody else to do it, its uploaded and wait for it, crash bang, hope and dreams of a million new customers from the web ruined, it does nothing, no customers, no sales, no nothing, a black hole in your business dreams. What’s gone wrong?
The website needs to optimised so that search engines like Google, Yahoo and Ask can find your site.

SEO ( search engine optimisation ) is a very very hot topic these days. How do you get your web site within the first few pages of the major search engines? How do you go about increaseing  your Google page rank? how do you get the search engines and directories to find your website and then index it?
There are a lot of companies out there who dedicate themselves full time to optimising and this can cost you a large amount of money each month, money that you could use else where in your business. This is something a lot of people can’t necessarily afford to pay for or spend the time on.
However, there are a few simple things you can do yourself  when building your site that will help increase your chances of having good results, below are a few of these items which you will find usefull. Nothing here is difficult to do nor is it time comsuming.

Title Tag
Near the very top of a web site’s source code you’ll find a few meta tags, the standard ones being the Title, Description and Keyword tags. The title tag plays a very large role in the indexing of your web site, that it is considered the most important of the three.
A page title is the first thing a search engine will look at when determining just what the website page is about. It is also the first thing potential visitors will see when reading your search engine listing.
It’s important to include a few relevant keywords in the title tag but don’t go overboard you don’t want to do what’s known as “keyword stuffing” which does nothing but make your web site look like spam. Most people will include either the company name, or title of the particular page here, as well.

Meta Tags
There are two primary meta tags in terms of getting your site out there, the description and the keyword tag. It’s long debated whether the search engines use the description tag as far as ranking your results. However it is one of the important tags because it is listed in your search result, it is what users read when your link comes up and what makes them decide whether or not to click on your link.
Be sure to include a few very relevant keywords in this tag, but don’t fill it with keywords. The description tag should read like a sentence, not a keyword list.

Due to “keyword stuffing” many search engines now completely disregard the keyword tag. It is no longer as important as it was years ago, however it doesn’t hurt to include them in your source code.
When you create your keyword list, you will want to think of the specific terms people will type in when searching for a site like yours. Just don’t go overboard,  too many duplicates are not a good thing (as in dog, big dog, small dog, dogs, big dogs, small dogs and so on). Those are all basically the same keywords, so pick one or two variations at the most and move on.

Proper Use of the Heading Tags
Heading tags are a important element to consider when writing out your site. Use of heading tags helps the users, the web browsers and the search engines know where the major key points of your site are.
Your main page title should use the <h1> tag such as <h1>Welcome to whatever<h1>   this shows what your page is about. The use of additional tags, such as <h2> and <h3> are equally important by helping to break down your website into sections, these tag go right down to <h6> and also give a visual break in the text. The various heading tags give a priority to the content and help to index your website properly.

Alt Attributes on Images
Alt attributes are when you hover your mouse curser over an image on the net some text will appear. Putting good alt attributes on your images serves two purposes. In terms of SEO, putting a brief yet good descriptive alt attribute along with your image, places relevant text to your source code that the search engines can see when indexing your site. The more relevant the text on your page the better chance you have of getting higher rankings on the search engines.

Title Attributes on Links
Including title attributes on links is yet another very important step that any good web site will have. As a note, you should use descriptive text for your links. “Click here” doesn’t tell a person anything or the search engines  what the link is. At least put a title tag that will explain that “Click Here” means “whatever you want it to mean” for example. Better yet make the main link text like “whatever you want it to mean” this will give a little bit of value to the link.

XML Sitemap
XML sitemaps are used by the search engines in order to index your site.
This list of ALL pages, posts, etc. of your site also includes information such as the date the page was last changed. You will need a site map.

Relevant Content
Having some content relevant to your main page or site topic is one of the  most important aspect of a page. You can put all the keywords you want in the meta tags and alt image tags, etc  but if the actual readable text on the page is not relevant to the target keywords, it ends up being a waist of time.
While it is important to include as many keywords in your page as possible, it is just as important for it to read well and make sense.

When creating your site, try to write naturally, explaining whatever information you’re discussing. Make it relevant, and  have it make sense to the reader. Even if you trick the search engines into thinking your page is great when a customer arrives at the site and can’t understand your information they will leave your site and move on to the next.

Building Links
We’ve all heard of the Google Page Rank  it seems to be every web site owner’s dream to have as high a page rank as possible.
DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO USE LINK FARMS for getting links to your site.
Write a Blog with relevant content, put a link to your site in the blog.

Social Media
Social Media is a very large factor these days in getting your web site noticed, that it’s an important element to include in your plan.

Social media ranges from the social networks like Twitter and Facebook to social bookmarking sites such as Delicious, Digg  and so on. Once you start to build your own networks and add quality content on your web site or blog, you’ll see traffic to your web site increasing.

Google Toolbar New Feature Copy Text

I assume the google toolbar was updated over night as there appears to be a new google toolbar feature which copies the text straight in to the toolbar when you highlight it on a page.

Not sure if this is new yet, or whether it is just a setting that has been changed in my toolbar, I will have a look around on some forums soon to see if it is being discussed anywhere.

On Page SEO is Still Important for Google

For a long time now my Top 10 Mobile Phones page has been top 3 in google, but after getting so fed up with the fact most mobile phone merchants and even most the networks are now displaying really prominant telephone numbers, and effectively gaining free traffic from mobile phone affiliates, I decided to remove a lot of content over Christmas.

Within a few days of doing this I noticed my page soon started dropping down the SERPs and for a while was even off the 1st page.

I left it for about a weak to see if it would just pick up naturally, but it soon became clear it wasn’t going to unless I did something about it.

What I actually did was go back to the basics of On Page SEO, by slightly increasing the keyword density, restructuring the header tags, and improving the navigation.

Low and behold, one week later is was back in the top 3 for Top 10 Mobile Phones and was even back to number 1 for Top Ten Mobile phones

Now all I have to do is find a good mobile phone merchant to send the traffic to rather than the ones exploiting our traffic by displaying prominant telephone numbers. It all makes me remember why I stopped bothering with mobile phone affiliate work a couple of years ago.

Still nice to see that  On Page SEO is Still Important and that going back to basics can still make a difference with Google.

Stop Google Personalized Search with UpperCase Searching

There has been a lot of talk on numerous forums about using personalized search even when people are not signed in to their google accounts.

Some are moaning that they will not know their true position in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) due to the fact google personalized search is effecting their listing.

Here is a quick tip for people having that problem. To stop Google Personalizes search effecting your searching simply mix up how you search by using upper case letters in the phrase.

i.e. if you have been searching for “keyword” and personalised  search is effecting your results, next time search for “keYword” which will retun true results.

Obviously when searching for “keYword” never click any listings in the SERPs or personalization may then be triggered for that too.

Please note: Google Personalised Search in UK

Free SEO Advice

SEO MADE EASY.

As a small business owner myself that runs www.salesandmarketingforums.co.uk I have found that SEO is a massive minefield. The jargon and secrets that surround the industry are now everywhere. There are so many different versions of what to do and not what to do that I did not know where to start.

So putting it simply 6 months ago I set out on a mission to learn SEO using all the different sources I had available to me. Mainly spending my time on the net reading up and putting the stuff I had learnt in front of a number of supposed experts I learnt in a very short period the basics and now I would like to put them into plain English for you to benefit from. Have you been asking yourself where do I begin? What is correct? What do I have to do?How long will it take? Since I started my journey I have achieved a number of first positions in Google and will continue my efforts to make the www.salesandmarketingforums.co.uk site sit pretty in all the key major search engines.

So lets begin, the first thing that you need to do is some keyword research to find out what sort of traffic you can expect from the terms you are optimising for – https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal this is what I have used as it is a great tool. Now let me also say here that if you have a new site or a site that has no onsite SEO done to it, it is not worth trying to get a primary keyword to rank for e.g. marketing. Instead you need to look at things like direct marketing London or advice on marketing surrey these are a lot easier to rank for but you need to make sure that they get traffic.

Also when typing this into a search engine you need to check the amount of total results as this is the amount of competition you will be up against. That should cover keyword research in its simplest terms you need to find keywords that will help you gain targeted traffic to your business service/product so that the traffic converts to enquiries. There are a number of experts that also believe that the site content will help towards the amount of conversions that you will receive and I am pleased to say that since we upgraded our site we have seen a 40% increase in the amount of new registered users so this is very true.

High traffic volumes is good but only if it becomes a converted lead or sale for your business.

Then we need to look at your onsite search engine optimisation and this includes

Meta Site Description

Headers

Meta Keywords

Alt Tags

Meta Tag Content There is a Meta Tag Analyzer here that may well help http://www.seocentro.com/tools/search-engines/metatag-analyzer.html

You can also find out a little more about how META tags work and what they are here http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=2167931

Sometimes playing with these yourself can result in damage so it is best to get someone to do it that knows what they are doing but a great tool to check your meta content is here http://www.seocentro.com/tools/search-engines/metatag-analyzer.html this should give you an idea of what you can do to make things better for your meta content and is something that I have used to moderate success.

Your page content is also very important it needs to relay all of the information in the above to the user of your site in a very friendly way (something I am working on). A spider BOT will crawl through your site from top to bottom and also bottom to top.

Sometime having something like the areas that you cover and services you provide can also benefit your efforts of SEO. Your page needs to contain your keywords but not too many times I would say twice is ok otherwise the search engines can class it as spam like and result in reduced rankings.

A great tool is Google Webmaster tools http://www.google.com/webmasters/ this is a great resource for uploading your site map to get it indexed more often by the search engines and you can create a complete sitemap here http://www.auditmypc.com/free-sitemap-generator.asp completely free of charge. This is relatively easy and will give you again another stamp in the pad.

Theres also a number of free tools here http://www.seomoz.org/toolbox that again are relatively easy to use. All of the above is for onsite promotion (as it is referred to in the industry) there is also off site SEO and this mainly consists of links coming to your site. To start with there are a number of directories that have a good page rank (Googles quality view of your site as I understand it) here http://www.bloggingmix.com/2008/02/20/submit-your-blog-free-directory-no-reciprocal-link-needed/. This is a good place to start with directory submissions. You will also need to submit your site to all of the main search engines here http://www.submitexpress.com/submit.html from all of this your email may be harvested and you could gain a lot of spam so it may be a good idea to get yourself a Gmail, Yahoo or hotmail account for this exercise.

Once you have done all of them it may be a good idea to join social networking sites like www.facebook.com, www.myspace.com and even forums like www.salesandmarketingforums.co.uk to share in a wealth of information covering all other angles of running your business.

Link building is then the ongoing concern, the ideal links are the ones that will benefit you so for example if you are targeting marketing advice London you need to type marketing advice in to the search engine and email the webmaster enquiring whether they will link to you to benefit their users with your product/service. You will need a good angle and it is a good idea to make sure that you link to the page you would like your link to be placed.

Press releases from people like www.10yetis.co.uk can also be a great benefit to your SEO results along with submitting articles and comments to blogs that are related to your service/products as they will be read by your target audience. All in SEO is a very long and time consuming thing to do but if you get it right you can reap the rewards. I have written this to benefit the business community and the advice given here is based on my own experiences. If you are looking to target primary one word keywords you are probably best speaking to a number of SEO experts as I have not got this far yet. I hope this helps and if you would like to follow my ongoing efforts please register at http://www.salesandmarketingforums.co.uk where I will be showing all of my latest posts on the blog facility.

Offering a completely free resource to small businesses with Podcasts, Articles, Blogs and the most active sales and marketing focused forum we will be able to help you with anything and everything to do with your sales and marketing.

How Much Does A Good SEO Earn?

I’ve seen numerous posts in forums asking how much a good SEO charges and answers have varied from around £10.00 per hour up to £150.00 per hour.

The lower figure is usually just a one man band, new to the industry, working from home with no overheads. The higher figure is usually from a bigger company with numerous staff, high overheads and high wages to pay, which means the £150.00 per hour goes to the company, not the individual SEO.

Neither are accurate, the small one man band will soon realise £10.00 an hour is too cheap if he is any good, will soon realise he is better of forming a proper business, his overheads will rise and that £10.00 an hour will have to at least double to generate a realistic wage.

The company charging £150.00 an hour will take all their costs out first, make their profit and then pay the individual based on results. With all that taken in to account the £150.00 per hour paid to the SEO company probably equates to less than £40.00 an hour to the individual SEO.

So what this leaves us is a figure between £20 an hour to £40 an hour for SEO work.

You can obviously pay less, catch a good SEO before he realises how much he should be earning. Also you can pay a lot more, but have the benefits of not just a good established SEO but the backing of the agency too.

To sum up, What the customer pays can vary from £10 per hour (for a short period) up to £150.00 per hour for an SEO and agency backing

What the actual SEO earns ranges from £10 to £40 per hour

And the good ones earn much more!

Poll for SEO’s

How much do you earn in an average week?

A. Below £300 a week 3%
B. Between £300 and £500 a week 12%
C. Beetween £500 and £750 a week 15%
D. Beetween £7,50 and £1,000 a week 22%
E. Beetween £1,000 and £1,500 a week 32%
F. Beetween £1,500 and £2,000 a week 14%

Search Engine Optimization Secrets Revealed – From Pages to Keywords

Search Engine Optimization Secrets Revealed – From Pages to Keywords
By Blake Evans

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a method for attracting visitors to websites. SEO works by making websites attractive to search engines. If search engines like your website, they may put it high up in the search listings. The higher up your site is on the listings, the more likely it is to be seen. That’s because most people only visit sites on the first one or two pages of listings. Effective search engine optimization gets your website listed on the all-important first pages.

Search engine optimization is an art and a science. It’s a new and dynamic field. It’s worth investigating if you have a commercial website and want to increase traffic. Following is basic information to help you get started.

Optimize Each Page:

Optimize each page of your website, not just the home page. Each page needs its own keyword or keyword phrase.

A keyword or keyword phrase is a word or short phrase (two to three words) people actually look for when they perform a search. It presents the best opportunity for high page ranking. Use a keyword that people commonly use when searching for the type of information your website offers. How do you know what keywords people use? Search term suggestion websites tell you how often people use your keyword. They also make suggestions for alternate but similar keywords. The trick is to use a keyword that is popular but not so common that your page will have tons of competition.

Use Keywords:

Put keywords in the right places.

• In the metatitle, which is at the top of the browser window when you view a page online.
• In the page title, preferably close to the beginning of the title.
• In the subtitle and subheadings, if you have them.
• In the meta description, which tells spiders what the page is about. The meta description describes the page in listing. Make the meta description clear and enticing, including the keyword several times.
• In captions, if you have graphics.
• Scatter throughout the content. Keyword density of two to five percent is the norm. If your keyword density is too high, you’ll get a low ranking and you may be accused of spamming. Plus, “stuffing” content with keywords makes for awkward writing.

High Ranking:

Effective search engine optimization improves search engine ranking, which increases the number of visitors. Other factors also affect search engine ranking. These include relevance and quality of content and user-friendliness. Well-written, easy to read articles that focus on one topic are considered user friendly. Article content that is original and brings value to the reader also improves ranking. Increasing the number of visitors to a website is the key to online success.

Google Likes Quality Paid Link Directories

Despite Google repeatedly declaring that they do not like paid links, they have actually endorsed their usage in certain circumstances. Even though this was publicly declared, a lot of people still seem unaware of this.

For a long time now Google have been very clear on their stance over paid links that manipulate the search engines. They are seriously frowned upon. As most of us know, the quantity and quality of links pointing to our sites has a major influence over our rankings. They are not the only factor in determining your rankings, but most SEO’s agree that they are very influential, probably the most influential thing.

Google’s primary job is to produce relevant and quality sites for searchers. Their very success depends upon them producing the best results. They see people buying links as a threat to this. Someone with a poor ‘spammy’ site, but some cash behind them, could simply buy loads of links and gain a top spot. It may be good for that particular site, but it isn’t good for the searcher and therefore it isn’t good for Google. Google do not want to be known for returning poor results. They know that their empire rests on this. People will simply switch to one of the other many search engines should the results be bad enough.

What not everyone is aware of is that Google is not rigid in this stance against paid links. There are some instances where paid links ARE acceptable to the search engine giant.

Of course paid ‘no follow’ links are perfectly acceptable to Google as, in theory at least, they do not pass any SEO benefits. (Some people do argue that they pass a small amount of SEO benefit, but that’s for another day). They only pass the benefit of the traffic gained directly through the link. For those not aware of ‘no follow’ links, these are links which Google will ignore. They are called ‘no follow’ because the Google bots will not follow this links.

However it is also sometimes acceptable for paid links that are ‘do follow’. Paid links that also offer an SEO benefit. Matt Cutts, one of Google’s top employees states quite clearly that Google is only worried about ‘paid links that flow PageRank AND attempt to game Google’s rankings.’

Now if we analyse this statement we can see that there are three parts to it. These are paid links, flow PageRank, AND attempt to game Google’s rankings. So not only must a link be paid and be ‘dofollow’ (flow PageRank), but there is also a third criteria that must be satisfied before Google will flag a link as being manipulative. The third criteria being ‘attempt to game Google’s rankings.’

This implies that not all paid links that pass over PageRank are necessarily gaming Google’s rankings. When defining ‘attempting to game Google’s rankings’, Matt Cutts discussed Google’s algorithms being able to automatically pick out lists of paid links that were not relevant to each other or the site. Eg. A list of links containing poker links, dating links, credit, junk yards etc. He also discusses the links containing ‘low quality’ links. Although he did not define what was a ‘low quality’ link, we probably intuitively know one when we see it. Links to spammy sites, or sites on the edge of legality. Also sites that use questionable link building and marketing practices.

So Google don’t like lists of paid links, that flow PageRank, that are irrelevant to each other, and/or are of ‘low quality’. Perhaps then Google doesn’t mind lists of paid links that flows PageRank, but are relevant to each other, and are high quality links?

It would seem so. Matt Cutts gives some specific advice as to what to look for in a paid directory before submitting to it. Google see it as important that a directory will reject links, rather than just accepting any link no matter what. He also specifically mentions the quality of the sites included in the list. He basically says that even if a directory does not accept every submission, if it contains mostly spammy sites, then it ‘doesn’t speak well to the quality of the directory.’ Therefore a directory must successfully filter out poor sites, so that the sites included there are perceived by Google as having a legitimate ‘stamp of quality’ from the directory. If any old site is included, then it doesn’t say much about the stamp of quality does it?

He then mentions about the fee charged by the directory. It would seem that it would be fine providing it is ‘primarily for the time/effort for someone to do a genuine evaluation of a URL or site.’ Note the word ‘primarily’. This would imply that part of the fee can be for something else. Presumably this is for the privilege of being included in a quality directory. This is perhaps confirmed by Google not penalizing many very large directories that they are obviously very aware of. The Yahoo directory, for example, charge $299 for inclusion. Surely it takes no longer than 5 or 10 minutes at most to evaluate a site? It would seem that the vast majority of this fee is not for evaluation, but for ‘something else’ – the privilege of being included in a quality directory.

So in summary it would appear that Google are fine with paid links that flow PageRank, providing they

have relevance to each other
don’t contain many poor quality links
don’t automatically accept any link
charge a fee PRIMARILY for evaluation (although this appears to be loosely interpreted)

So you can buy links! Google still consider that buying links from quality directories that conform to this criteria is an endorsement to the site that receives this paid link. All you need to do is evaluate whether the directory is quality before parting with your hard earned cash. There are three important things to consider

Make sure that the links in the directory are well placed in separate categories, and not just all jumbled together. A niche directory will be particularly good for this, since all the links will be related in some way.

Randomly check several of the links on any directory you wish to buy links from. Check that the sites are quality, have good content, are trusted sites with strong brand names. You may need to go with your gut a little on this, and ask yourself ‘are these quality sites on this directory’.

Don’t submit to sites that will immediately accept your link automatically. This tells Google that there is no actual review for quality, and Google will strive to make these links worthless. It would not be surprising if Google could detect software that automatically adds links when they have been received. Make sure that the links are manually added, and that they are reviewed for quality.

If you follow these three things, then Google is very likely to allow the SEO benefits of these paid links to flow to your site uninterrupted. Rather like diet food products that can help ‘only as part of a calorie controlled diet’, the same is probably true here. Buy links yes, but only do so as part of your overall link building strategy. Knowing Google, they may well frown upon this being your sole link building method. Even if this is not the case, it certainly can’t harm to use a variety of methods to build your links, such as article submissions, and link requests. But as part of your calorie controlled diet, go and feed yourself with some quality paid link directories, preferably niche, but don’t gorge yourself on them!

Long description in google blog search

I noticed this evening that using the google blog search appears to bring up descriptions displayed which are a lot longer than usual.

I’m not sure if this is something new or just something I haven’t really noticed before, but it will be interesting if it is new, and even more interesting if Google start displaying longer descriptions in the SERPS.

Pay Per Click Payment Options

When managing the funds of your pay-per-click campaigns, there are two ways to go about it. Advertisers can either choose to make a deposit first and have the system (Google, Yahoo, or MSN) makes a deduction from the prepaid balance until the funds runs dry, or they can choose to pay the outstanding charges at the end of the billing cycle. Analogically speaking, it’s almost like “prepaid airtime” vs. “pay-at-the-end-of-the-month” for your cell phones.

Some search engines accept both methods and some only accept a particular method, and each search engines have their own minor variations on the policies.

We have gathered info on payment options offered by the three major search engines.

1. Prepay – This method requires advertisers to pay before their ads can start running. As users click on the ads, the system deducts the charge from the advertisers’ prepaid balance.

Google – Available, Accepted Payment Methods:Credit Card, Debit Card, Bank Transfer

Yahoo – Available, Accepted Payment Methods:Credit card, Pay Pal

MSN – Not Available

2. Postpay – This method requires advertisers to pay after their ads start running and charges accrued.

Google – Available, Accepted Payment Methods:Credit Card, Debit Card, Direct Debit

Yahoo – Not Available

MSN – Available, Accepted Payment Methods:Credit Card, Monthly Invoice

3. Both Prepay and Postpay – This is a new payment option introduced by Google. It’s sort of a mix of both prepay and postpay. Advertisers can choose the amount they wish to pay for each postpay payment. Advertisers can even overpay the charges to create a surplus of funds (which acts like prepaid balance).

PPC Targeting Options

Google’s behavioral targeting has become a popular topic these days, and Yahoo has just recently added “Demographic Bidding”. But before we get familiar with the new, let’s review the old. I’ve put together a table of basic targeting options offered by the three major search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN).

All the information is gathered from each search engine’s help page.

1.Location Targeting – Allows advertisers to target a specific geographical area, or a combination of areas. Their ads would only show up at the locations they target.

Google allows the advertiser to select any combination of locations to target with their campaigns, including countries, territories, regions, cities and custom areas.

Yahoo allows the advertisers to geographically targeting their campaigns by:

* Entire Market
* Country, State/Province, Designated Market Area (DMA), or City
* ZIP/Postal Code

In MSN, advertisers can target their campaigns to potential customers in specific countries/regions, states/provinces, metro areas, or cities within their market. Microsoft adCenter does not offer targeting by postal code at this time.

2. Language Targeting – Allows advertisers to target their campaigns to a specific or a combination of language group, for example: English, Japanese.

Google’s AdWords system looks at a user’s Google interface language setting to see if it matches one of the languages that the advertiser’s campaign is targeting.

Yahoo do not have Language Targeting option

In MSN by selecting a language and market, you are selecting the language you will write your ads in and the market that your ads will be distributed through.

3. Demographic Targeting – Allows advertisers to target their campaigns to specific age groups, gender, and etc.

Available only on Google content network. Google will analyze the demographical preferences advertisers selected and create a list of available Google Network sites that are popular with that audience.

Currently only available for Yahoo! sites. Demographic bidding adds a premium specified by advertisers to bids that are searched by the preferred demographics, so their ads show up at higher than usual positions.

You can target customers by age and gender so that your ads are displayed more frequently to people who will be interested in them. The data used for the demographic targeting option comes from information reported by MSN customers.

4. Ad Scheduling – Allows advertiser to schedule their ads to show up at different times of the day.

In Google ad scheduling can be enabled for any AdWords Standard Edition campaign. Advertisers may also choose the advanced mode, which allows them to raise or lower their bids for a campaign at certain times of the day.

In Yahoo ads can be set to run all day, to run only on specific times of the day, or to not run at all on specific days. These scheduling preferences can also be mixed so ads run on different schedule for different days.

In MSN Ads can be set to run on specific days of the week and specific times of the day.

The Importance of Heading Tags in your SEO Strategy

If you are not already using headings on your website, now it is the time to start using them. Why? They will help you improve your website ranking in the search engine. The heading tags are HTML tags that are used to hierarchically organize the design and the content of a web page. These “H” tags range from H1 to H6 (the short form of Heading 1 – most important, to Heading 6, the least important, and define text in header font and prominence. In established site, tags are used to give the page structure of “what” the the page is about. It suggests both to human visitors and search engines the ontology of the page and how important a page section is based on the section heading type, H1 or H6. By doing this, visitors can understand the pages in better manner and website can boost in search engines result.

There are six levels of heading tags in HTML: H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6. The H1 tag heading should contain the most important section of the site and often it is a good idea to match the page title tag (title of the website page). The H2 tag is next important tag which is used for subheading. This tag is lesser important than the H1 tag, but still of high importance for search engines. The H2 tag can support H1 tag by repeating the most important keyword in both H1 and H2. While the H3 tag is for titles of different sections in content, it is not recommend to be used as the title of page. The H4, H5, and H6 tags are used for sub-heading to the content section or the information in the footer.

The H1 tag is the most important of the six “H” tags in SEO strategy. It should be placed at the top of content so that visitors can easily understand what the content of the page is about.. This heading should accurately and briefly describes the content of the web page that follows and it should contain your main important keyword. Do not overuse it, meaning do not use the H1 more than once on the same web page The search engine robots will visits your website pages and analyze their content. While trying to determine the main theme (please read, “keyword”) of a specific web page, The robots will look for important tags such as the H1 and other heading tags that are present to find the content. If there is a semantic relationship between the page title, the H1 and H2 tags and the body text content, chances are that the robots will properly identify the main theme of the page and will give it a boost in search results related to that keyword.

Search engine robots are “crawling” as many web pages as they can find on your website, and for each page they will try to figure out which keywords and key phrases those pages are relevant for. To rank your website higher in search engines, it is helpful to consider placeming the most important keywords into various levels of header tags.
