Noise is the often-missing link in an Environmental Audit. Whereas Sight and Light, Smoke and Dust, Solid/Liquid waste and Land contamination fall naturally to the Environmental Sciences; Noise has often played Cinderella and not been invited to the ball.

Developments and their interaction with existing infrastructure, industrial districts, shopping precincts, quiet zones, and existing housing or “infill” has to be planned. Noise and vibration are only two of the subjects that are considered in this process, If ignored however, the problems encountered later assume far greater proportions and the cost of a remedy becomes greater. Noise related planning of a development may be as simple as inserting a standard paragraph in planning conditions, or continuous liaison throughout early project stage with the Local Authority and the Environment Agency so that a coherent plan and a single set of unambiguous noise limits and conditions is presented to the developer.
In today’s world it is difficult to find a piece of land on which to build a new plant that is so distant from neighbours that noise radiated from the plant can be ignored, thus Environmental Impact Appraisal has often to be provided as a written report. Even when such a site has been identified the noise generated within a plant or building has to be controlled to National, Promoter, or Finance House standards.
