Hypnosis is generally misunderstood. Impressions from stage shows and on TV tend to give the perception of 'mind control'. This is unfortunate since hypnotherapy does not control, it assists in making beneficial changes. For example, it can removed unwanted habits by 'reprogramming'. It is not magic, but an effective & powerful resource!
Another misconception is that only the weak-minded can be hypnotised. In fact, research and experience shows the opposite to be true - the higher the intelligence the more easily hypnosis occurs. The ideal client would have at least average intelligence, be open-minded and have sufficient desire & motivation for change. A healthy scepticism is fine.
Hypnosis is actually a totally natural state of mind like a daydream, with the therapist gently guiding the client into a state of refreshing relaxation. All hypnosis is basically self-hypnosis - self induced.
Even the best hypnotist can not hypnotise someone against their will and where the client just 'goes with the flow' he or she remains completely in control of every part of their mind and body. People do vary in their depth of 'trance', of course we are all a little different, but hypnotic depth is not equated with effectiveness of treatment. Even a light trance will give beneficial results, providing change is what the client truly seeks.
Evidential research into hypnotherapy is impressive. Large scale trials have shown it to be the most effective, easiest and quickest method of quitting smoking, for example. Also in cases of stress and anxiety it can produce outstanding results. If the mind is involved in creating symptoms, hypnotherapy has a part to play in resolving them. It is natural, non-medicative and can open the door to a happier more fulfilling life.
