They help you to keep your finger on the pulse within your organisation. You don’t necessarily need to do them yourself you can delegate certain sections; but you should make your employees aware whenever you perform these “self” audits. How it works For a small business to run effectively, employees need to know exactly what’s required of them so that they can be responsible and efficient in discharging their duties to you. This is why you employ them. They also need to be capable and accountable. The first part of the BCS process therefore, is to review current provision and quality of job descriptions. After discussions with you re the areas of your business that you would like to improve, your current Business processes will be examined/reviewed along with your in house forms and documentation, to determine how effective and efficient they are. Questionnaires will be issued to staff. The feedback from these is often interesting and helps to highlight areas where there may be confusion. At the end of the review, the findings will be presented to you, along with recommendations for improving and implementing internal controls. Forms, procedures, policies and job descriptions tailored to your business can be designed and issued to help you maintain control. Staff training can also be delivered on most computer applications. Internal Audit programmes/monitoring processes can also be written for you. Examples of the areas covered are: • Administration Control • Cash Control • Refund Control • Security • Banking • Sales Processing • Stock Management • Health & Safety An additional service can be offered in some instances by way of a recovery audit. This can examine: • Duplicate payments that you may have made to your suppliers • Incorrectly processed VAT transactions • Errors on incoming invoices and rebates or discounts not claimed • Credits mistaken for invoices • Pounds mistaken for pence in input data • Errors on incoming invoices • Rebates or discounts not claimed • Temporary accounting staff errors The process is not a review of your finances.
