Free Marketing Advice for Businesses -
1 – KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER – The first mistake many businesses make is not knowing there customers. Define your target market carefully through research and segmentation and then position yourself as different and as superior to that of your competitors.
2 – GET YOUR MESSAGE RIGHT – A great way to do this is to do a SWOT analysis of your business. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats – Write it all out on a piece of blank paper and you will be surprised at how focused this will make you in writing your message to your potential customers.
3 – FEATURES AND BENEFITS – A feature is a great thing but it always needs to be backed up by the benefits of the feature. I.E. – “The stereo has a 500 watt output (feature) giving you great quality of sound (benefit) “. The benefits are what will drive the customer’s impulse to buy against your competitors.
4 – ALWAYS FOLLOW UP – You have just done all of the hard work and attracted the customer to your product or service. You have spoken to the potential customer and engaged their interest to be told I need to speak to….. So what do you do next? Forget it as you have 10 other prospects… ‘No’ you need to schedule a follow up and make sure that you do it. Conversion rates can be dramatically improved just by following up properly. Even if you lose that potential it is still wise to follow up 3 months later to see how they are getting on. Who knows maybe they still need the offering that you have.
5 – PERSISTENCY IS VITAL – Over many years I have met business owners that have got slack with their marketing efforts. Let’s say that you have been marketing for 3 months solid and suddenly 5 customers all come in at the same time. You are too busy to accommodate them and keep the marketing going at the same time. So you deal with the new customers and fulfil their need and then suddenly your business is very quiet again. That is why it is of paramount importance to continue your marketing efforts even if it is just for 10 minutes a day.
Marketing is a very simple process once you have found the ways that work and measured their success to ensure you know that you are gaining a return on investment.
You will try many different ways of marketing and sometimes may feel that none of it is working. Measure, track and monitor what you are doing by using codes or tracking software to find out where your customers are coming from.
Try different messages as some will work better than others but when you find one that works stick with it. I have always said that running a business is about 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration stick with this motto and you should not go too wrong. Is marketing just for big companies?
Do you wish people would come to you rather than knocking on doors? What if you never had to cold call? Or if people knew your company name before you’d even met them? That is the power of marketing and it works for small companies just as well as it does for big companies. What marketing can you do?
Marketing is a very broad area. The ultimate goal of it has to be to help you sell more. You could do this through having the right brand, a great website, writing a direct mail letter, broadcasting an email campaign, tweeting on Twitter, an advert in a magazine or coverage in the press.
So, do you know you should be doing some marketing or would you like better results from your marketing?
